The "Big Bang Theory" gets a lot of praise for consistently delivering the laughs on CBS, but the model from which it derives is name is apparently not as well loved by citizens of the United States. Half of all Americans reported that they were "not too confident" or "not at all confident" that "the universe began 13.8 billion years ago with a big bang," according to Science World Report.

The poll, which was conducted by GfK Public Affairs & Corporate Communications, found that 51 percent of Americans questioned the big bang theory. Additionally, about four in ten people who were polled doubted that global warming was a result of human influence.
"Science ignorance is pervasive in our society and these attitudes are reinforced when some of our leaders are openly antagonistic to established facts," said 2013 Nobel Prize in medicine winner Randy Schekman of the University of California, Berkeley.
As one would expect, the political opinions of those polled showed a correlation between progressive views and religious thinking. Science World Report also reported that "Democrats were more apt to show support for evolution, the Big Bang theory and climate change than Republicans. However, conservative individuals were more likely to have religious beliefs than their liberal counterparts."
Another Nobel Prize Winner, Robert Lefkowitz, said, "When you are putting up facts against faith, facts can't argue against faith."
Lefkowitz went on to describe how political, business and religious groups may have a strong effect on a "lack of public confidence in scientific consensus on such matters as vaccines, climate change, evolution" and the big bang theory.
